Photographs of the windmill at Barwick-in-Elmet

We are grateful to Richard Burlend of Dunmow, Essex a descendant of Edward Burlend( for the above photographs. Mr Burlend's great-grandfather was the owner of the mill in the closing years of the 19th century and it is almost certain that the photographs originate from that period. The photographs show the windmill before and after the sails were removed at the turn of the 19th/20th century. The mill has been the subject of several articles in the Barwicker. We do not know the identity of the people in the photographs but there is a strong possibility that the woman in the second picture is Sally Gratton who lived in Towler's Fold at that time.
