Barwick-in-Elmet Historical Society

Village Memorials / Inscriptions

The Churchyards of All Saints Church, Barwick contain many 100s of memorial stones or markers. Since 2013 the Society has been recording and transcribing them.

This has been completed a number of times before by individuals or organisations. In 1908 Mr. Lumb recorded many in his book "Wills Registers and Monumental Inscriptions of Barwick in Elmet". In January 1973 the memorials in Jubilee Gardens were recorded and the Womans Institute completed a survey in 1982.

In the 18th and 19th Century various Antiquarians visited the Church and recorded a few of the more interesting memorials. All of the previous transcripts miss out areas of the churchyard and many fail to record the full inscriptions. The Historical Society's transcript includes the full surviving details and a photograph of each memorial. We are also combining our new record with the previous transcripts revealing many memorials which have disappeared over the years. In addition we are including any inscriptions on public display in the villages of Scholes and Barwick-in-Elmet.

In the period 1959 to 1962 most of the memorials on the East and South sides of All Saints Church, many of which were broken or worn, were removed and some were re-used in the paths surrounding the Church. 84 memorial were removed of which it is now possible to identify 34. Similary in 1973 the memorial stones in the detached Churchyard (now Jubilee Gardens) were removed and some re-used in the paths. 78 stones were removed of which it is now possible to identify 56.

Our transcript is now complete and is a very useful resource for Researchers and Family Historians. Where possible memorials have been checked across to the burial registers and/or Parish News Magazines. An alphabetical list of surnames is available below, use this to identify the memorial number and then find this on the memorial list.

Notes.
1) Photographs are not included online but where noted that one is available a copy can be requested from chapelcottage@btinternet.com
2) Great care has been taken in preparing and checking the transcript and index but it contains 1,000 and 1,000 of pieces of information and some errors may exist. If they do we apologise and would be grateful if they could be reported to chapelcottage@btinternet.com for correction.
